This program enhances traditional instruction of future physicians and health professionals who will be exposed to the rewards of working in medically underserved communities.

The overall mission of the PCLP is to increase capacity in primary care services across the US by growing a pipeline of healthcare professionals. Scholars will be actively engaged in healthcare services, leadership training, and institutional project activities relevant to both academic programs and host sites, and will participate in a network of organizations and individuals from academic institutions, NMF alumni and program advisors.

Scholarships will be awarded this year to 30 medical students and 8 nursing or health sciences students with a stipend that is expected to cover travel, living and lodging expenses. In addition to students who can apply, nominations are also invited from academic advisors. Applicants are ranked by the Advisory Board on the basis of recommendations, personal statement, academic achievements, and leadership potential.

Applicants should specify preference as to summer placement location with a proposed project and commitment to complete program requirements between May 15 and August 30, The SPR and APS offer a medical student research training program to encourage gifted medical students to consider careers in research related to pediatrics.

Students selected to the program are able to choose or are assigned to leading research laboratories. Currently, our Directory of Laboratories lists research opportunities at more than laboratories in the United States and Canada. Each research experience allows the student to spend two to three months at 40 hours per week in a research environment. Applicants must be enrolled in a medical school in the U.

The application should include the laboratories of interest to the student. The student is responsible for arranging living quarters, transportation and submitting reports and evaluations. Students are selected by the Student Research Subcommittee. The actual selection is made on the basis of an assessment of the student's application and the two 2 faculty recommendations.

With guidance from the applicant, every effort is made to place students with the laboratory of their choice to match their particular interests and talents. Further information can be obtained from the Student Research Program Coordinator at student-research aps-spr.

The most encouraging data supporting the contributions of this MSRP to the stated goal of recruitment and training of pediatric clinician-investigators are the remarkable numbers of former students who participated in the MSRP from through who have entered careers in academic pediatrics.
